Frequently asked questions

Straight answers about our dash cams, delivery and returns. Something else on your mind? Email support@dashproof.co.uk and a real person will reply.

Is a dash cam legal in the UK?

Yes. The only rule is that it mustn't block your view of the road, so mount it behind the rear-view mirror. Recording on public roads is allowed.

Can the police and my insurer use the footage?

Footage can help support your insurance claim or a police report. Each insurer and police force decides how they use it. Keep the original file and send that.

Is the rear camera as sharp as the front?

No, and we'd rather tell you now. On kits with a rear camera, the rear records at a lower resolution than the front (each product page gives the exact figure). It clearly shows what happened behind you, but it won't match the front for number plates at a distance.

Which dash cam should I choose?

It depends on what you want on record:

  • The road ahead: a front camera covers most claims, from someone pulling out to a sudden brake.
  • Behind you too: pick a kit with a rear camera for rear-end shunts.
  • Inside the car: a cabin camera with infrared records passengers after dark, useful for taxi, private hire and delivery drivers.
  • Around the car: multi-camera kits also cover the sides.
  • Screen or phone: a built-in screen lets you replay a clip at the roadside; Wi-Fi models send clips straight to your phone.

Every product page lists what's in the box, the resolution of each camera and what it can't do. See all dash cams, or email support@dashproof.co.uk and we'll help you choose.

Will it work in my car?

Yes for cars, SUVs and most vans. Most of our dash cams plug into the 12V socket (the cigarette lighter). Lorries and some larger vehicles run on 24V: check "Will it fit my car?" on the product page for that model's exact power needs. Not sure? Email us your make and model and we'll check.

Fitting & everyday use

Using your dash cam

Can I fit it myself?

Most models, yes: no drilling and no garage. Stick the mount behind your rear-view mirror and run the cable along the headliner and door seal to the power socket. If your kit has a rear camera, it goes inside the back window or above the number plate, depending on the model: each product page shows where.

The Stealth and the 24h hardwire kits connect to your fuse box. For those, we recommend a professional fit, such as an auto electrician.

Do I need a memory card?

Yes, a microSD card, Class 10 or faster. Some kits include one: check "What's in the box" on the product page. If you buy your own, a high-endurance card made for constant recording is best.

Will parking mode drain my car battery?

Recording while parked needs constant power from a hardwire kit. Some models offer a 24h hardwire kit as an option on their product page. Choose one with a low-voltage cut-off: it switches the camera off before your battery runs low. The kit connects to your fuse box, so we recommend a professional fit.

How do I get the footage off the camera?

Take the microSD card out and open the files on a computer, or on your phone with a card reader. Some models can also send clips to your phone: check the product page for the model you're looking at.
